Tuesdays are my longest days ever, starting with work until 1:30, then classes until 8.15pm. This might have explained the weird tangent I went on in my international librarianship class when we were discussing globalization and its detrimental impacts on other cultures.

I offered that Benedict Anderson’s work on imagined communities suggests that we shouldn’t lament over perceived cultural losses since national identity is a fictitious construct anyway used by governments to coerce populations into supporting grand economic endeavors. This was all good and fine until I devolved into mentioning that even though that’s still an interesting way to look at identity, it isn’t helpful when examining cultural losses outside of a Western context because then it turns into another Old White Guy telling people what is and isn’t true about their way of life- obviously not a productive trajectory for hosting conversations about why globalization (the stupidly overwhelming concept that it is) is or isn’t ultimately destructive to disenfranchised nations.

Then I apologized for not knowing what I was talking about and left the room to get candy since I was obviously suffering from some sort of blood sugar irregularity brought on by a twelve hour day.
